APON Foundation distribute food packages to 230 COVID-19 victims families

The families are from different slums located in Rayer Bazar, Gulshan Jhilpar and Uttara No 8 Sector Rail gate. The recipients of the food packages were APON School students and their parents, most of whom work as rickshaw pullers, day labourers and domestic maids in the capital city, but are now struggling to make ends meet because of movement restrictions.

The packages distributed include 5kg rice, 1-liter oil, 1kg lentils, 2kg potatoes, 1kg salt, 1kg onion, soap bars and masks. The relief materials are expected to provide for a 4-5-member family for at least a week.

APON reached out to approximately one thousand members of the country’s most vulnerable communities through this distribution. Prior to the event, APON had distributed ‘donation tokens’ to its students to ensure orderly distribution of the food packages while maintaining government rules relating to social distancing.

M Asraf Uddin, assistant professor at Jagannath University and member of APON’s governing council was present at the distribution program. Asraf Uddin said that despite the quarantine restrictions, hunger was forcing the needy to come out into the streets. “Today’s program should be continued regularly in order to keep these people at home and to ensure safety of the entire community,” he said.

Earlier the Foundation set up an emergency assistance program to help its regular students and their family members. Member of the public can donate to the Foundation through bank at
